Characters
ROBIN HOOD: Our courageous hero who becomes an outlaw — as obvious. (M or F)
LITTLE JOHN: Contrary to his name, he is large in stature, but small in the brain department — one of Robin's "Merry Men", but also the "Simple Simon" of the piece. (M)
FRIAR TUCK: The rotund Friar of St Mary's Abbey — plump and jolly, bald in the middle and wears a cassock. One of the Merry Men but with a side-line in wine-making and drinking! (M)
WILL SCARLET: The next member of Robin's Merry Men — wears a red shirt/tunic. Often played as a female character ("Will" being short for Wilhelmena) but could be male. (M or F)
MUCH THE MILLER: Member of the Merry Men, initially dressed as his name implies. (M)
ALANA DALE: The fifth of Robin’s Merry Men, a female member. She is a wandering minstrel, so initially dressed as such (F)
SHERIFF OF NOTTINGHAM: The King’s Viceroy in Nottinghamshire – a ruthless, greedy and the baddie of the piece (M)
MAID MARIAN: The Sheriff’s ward – kind hearted and with playing age of 18 (F)
NURSE NELLIE NICKERLASTIC: The Sheriff’s former Nanny, who also becomes nursemaid to the ‘Babes’ – typical pantomime Dame character (M)
SNIVEL AND GROVEL: The Sheriff’s bungling henchmen and tax collectors – typical panto-style comedy twosome. Both are extremely dim, grubby, subservient types. Grovel is the more idiotic of the two (Either M or F)
ELLA and SAM: The King’s niece and nephew – although referred to as the “Babes’, their playing ages are actually 12 and 1- respectively, but these important speaking roles are commonly played by teenagers (F and M respectively)
KING RICHARD: The good King – Richard the Lionheart (M) (Small feature role)
POET/BARD/FAIRY: Referred to as ‘The Poet’ in the script. He or she sets the scene for each Act in rhyming couplets. (M or F)
CHORUS: Medieval Courtiers / Peasants / School Children / Dancers
Story
Legend combines with rip-roaring comedy as Robin and his trusted band of Merry Men try to outfox the baddie we love to hate, the Sheriff of Nottingham. Meanwhile, Nurse Nellie Nickerlastic is desperately trying to protect the Babes from the clutches of the Sheriff’s bungling henchmen, Snivel and Grovel.
It’s fun and frolics all the way with a hilarious schoolroom scene, not to mention the mayhem of Nellie’s haunted boudoir! Cram-packed with comedy, this true pantomime version offers oodles of Chorus involvement, audience participation and honest-to-goodness family fun!
